Good stuff here. Yeah, definitely some exciting times coming up for us. What are your thoughts on the movement to cubism and abstract painting and where photography stands today? Collages seem like a hopeful way to move forward and expand the time and space of a memory/experience/place.
I know I already mentioned to you the paralyzed cyclops. This is, of course, a term I borrowed from Hockney. He has some good things to say about the idea of perspective, Western perspective, specifically, that we shouldn’t be married to what the Renaissance helped us see in terms of camera obscura (seeing things through a single plane, as a camera does) and that we need to move away from that to best represent a scene.
Like you said, going back to the basics of the cave paintings can help us understand what’s needed for the eye, but how then to adjust our photos? How do we see a scene?
This has helped me move from simply positioning myself for that one picture, but now I wonder how to best see a street, a party, etc. Collages seem hopeful to me, though they can be confusing (and work best, usually, with contrasting juxtaposition of subject matter, which might not work for a single scene). Hence the reason I asked you about collages.
Look forward to hearing more about your exploration.
